Forgotten Victory: Burma 1945 At the start of 1945, British Fourteenth Army faced massive logistical challenges and a veteran enemy full of fight. The British had to mount an offensive over hundreds miles of nearly impassable terrain and across two major rivers, which meant relying on aerial and riverine transport. Nevertheless, they conducted a brilliant campaign, retaking most of Burma before the onset of the monsoons in May.

• St. Vith, 16–23 Dec 1944 St. Vith was a major road and railway junction near the north edge of the Ardennes Forest, with hard-surface roads running north, south and west from it. The town itself lay on a low hill that was in turn surrounded by higher ground, close to the west end of the Losheim Gap. It presented military thought far ahead of its time; however, it had a fatal flaw in that it ignored the strategic level of war. In that way, while the Germans fielded many superb commanders adept at tactics and operations, they were relatively blind to overarching strategic realities.
