Battles for Tsaritsyn: 1918–20 Starting in the summer of 1918, the Bolsheviks and anti-communist Whites fought a campaign in and around Tsaritsyn (Volgograd). That city was a vital objective for both sides. At one point, the Whites used it as a base for an offensive against Moscow, but by the start of 1920 the tide turned in favor of the Reds.
