South China Sea - The New Dragon’s Lair: During the past few years China has fortified a number of islands in the South China Sea. With an American shift in perspective toward the Pacific, this region has the potential for an international stand-off.

• Cenepa War - Peru versus Ecuador, 1995: In January 1995, Ecuador and Peru fought a five-week war in the remote Amazonas jungle of South America. It was the third conflict between the two nations in the 20th century.
• Tankers in the Gulf: The waters in the Persian Gulf were a dangerous place in the 1980s. After Iraqi instigation to destroy Iranian oil infrastructure, merchant vessels became a prime target for the belligerents.
