  • The Battle of Big Hole Basin On 9 and 10 August 1877, elements of the US Army’s 7th Infantry Regiment and various volunteers, all under the command of Col. John Gibbon, fought a battle against the Nez Perce at Big Hole Basin, Montana, in which both sides suffered heavy casualties. The Indians realized they could not to remain in Idaho or Montana, and they would have to conduct a fighting withdrawal to sanctuary in Canada.
  • The Kaiser’s Raiders: 1914–18 World War I German commerce raiders were vessels used for what they termed the Handelskrieg (trade war) against Allied shipping. The ships were mostly light cruisers stationed in various ports of the German colonial empire before the war. There were also passenger liners they armed and recommissioned as “auxiliary cruisers,” and freighters outfitted as raiders. They had a significant effect on Allied naval strategy in the early months of the war.
  • Firebase Ripcord Located atop an almost 1,000-meter high hill a short distance from the northeast edge of South Vietnam’s A Shau Valley, Fire Support Base Ripcord was remote and was also too small for a landing strip, That left helicopters as the only way in and out. Nevertheless, in March 1970, FSB Ripcord became an important component of Operation Texas Star, the last major American-led offensive of the war.
