Marathon & Granicus

The Ancient Battles game system (17 different battle scenarios spread over 3 boxed sets and 2 magazine game issues) is a tactical simulation of ancient battles. Each game in the system represents one of the great combats of the ancient world. The playing pieces represent the actual units that participated in the battles. The map represents the terrain over which those units fought.

Marathon was the first battle of the Graeco-Persian War (499-448 BC) and was between invading Persian and Greek forces 26 miles outside of Athens on 1 April 300 BC. Granicus was Alexander’s first battle in his attempt to conquer Asia. The Macedonians encountered a Persian army in a defensive position along the Granicus River.
